Quite recently, a short text reminded me of the long-forgotten joy I had when I first came across the work of Jacobus Vrela. I was also reminded of this painting. So many questions arise when I look at the innocent scene of a play between woman and a child. Why is the room so empty, who is this woman, what is her relationship with the girl on the other side of the window, why is this child standing alone in the darkness, is she real? And I’m still not sure about the construction of the chair on which a woman is balancing. Searching for answers requires looking at the image, building subsequent stories that move the figures. I am very happy that at the end of 2020 there will be an opportunity to see this picture among many others at the Vrela’s monographic exhibition in Munich, Paris and The Hague! ❤️
